What Is a Reel-to-Reel Player Doing at 3,014 Meters?
Altihut's ninth summer season has come to a close. At 3,014 meters above the ordinary, here is what it takes to keep a hut below Mount Kazbek cozy, comfortable and safe, and what winter brings next. Business as usual, only it's done in style.
Altihut has two seasons. Summer begins when the snow melts and our horses can reach the hut, and ends in the second half of October once the snow comes again. Winter belongs to ski tourers and mountaineers. Our ninth summer opened late under heavy snow and closed on 23 October 2026.
No road leads to Altihut, only hiking trail. You can drive as far as the Gergeti Trinity Church. From there, it is six kilometers on foot and nearly 1,000 meters of vertical hike.
At 3014m destination, one arrives tired, wind-burned and ready for something simple. But, stepping inside and finding a library, a working PO Box, a cup of specialty coffee roasted specially for Altihut’s guests, and a Swiss-made state of the art Revox reel-to-reel player wired to an Italian tube amplifier and custom-made floor-standing speakers…
"What?" .... We know the look. Those faces are among our favorite images of every season.
At 3,014 meters, the next question is usually: "How did you get it here?"
The short answer is - carefully. The long answer is the story of Altihut and its philosophy. At altitude, ordinary things acquire a second life as a logistical puzzle: food, water, laundry, waste and power all have to be planned, carried and paid for, and you do it once, with style and quality.
Simple, but not easy.
Attitude, not Altitude
The story of Altihut began on mountain-bike trails. Three earthmen, fed up with seeing extraordinary landscapes left worse by the people who came to enjoy it. In 2015, an expedition in the Chaukhi massif turned that frustration into a decision to stop complaining and deliver the answer. Clean-ups came first, then sanitation, safer access and a bridge over the Chkheri River and finally, Altihut (Altitude LLC) was founded in 2016 and opened to guests in 2018.
Yet, simple, but easy though: Altihut is a privately funded impact investment in high-altitude hospitality. Hospitality in this equation is the tool; Impact is the destination. Our motto, Attitude, not Altitude, sums up the daily work - take care of the place that hosts us. #takecareofyourplanet
The first of its kind
For more than seven decades, no new hut rose on the slopes of Kazbek or even Greater Caucasus. The last was built in the 1940s, as meteorological station, known today as the Bethlemi Hut. Altihut broke that silence in 2018 and set a new standard for mountain huts in Georgia and Caucasus.
There is no other hut like it:
Swiss design and execution, Georgian private investment – it was built in Switzerland in Vil by S.Muller and delivered to Gerogia by Gebruder Weiss and helicoptered by Legendary Swiss pilot Franz Cotting and his Georgian colleague Tamaz Datukishvili.
One of the highest restaurants in Europe. Real food, specialty coffee and delicious hot chocolate at 3,014 meters.
A library, a PO Box and a listening room on the shoulder of Kazbek mount 5054, probably the highest in its kind in Europe.
Power and signal, self-funded. Solar energy and GSM antennas above 3,000 meters, paid for and maintained by us, so everyone who climbs Kazbek can stay in touch and call for help when they need it.
A home for rescuers. Each season we host Legendary Polish volunteer mountain rescuers Bezpieczny Kazbek with lodging, food and a lift for their gear.
A race of its own. We revived the alpine marathon and co-organize it every year with Trail Lab.
Ski touring, Caucasus style. Together with our friends and partners at Trail Lab, we created Skimo, which organizes a ski-touring competition and festival.
A birdwatchers' paradise. Look for the Caucasus Big Five from the hut itself.
That work has been recognized: Georgia's Best Adventure Tourism Award (2018), the Meliora Grand Prix for Most Responsible SME of the Year (2019), Entrepreneur Georgia's boldest entrepreneurs (2020) and the TBC Business Award (2025). Altihut is a case study in Routledge's Contemporary Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Sustainable Tourism and has been featured in Harper's Bazaar UK.
Music that matters at 3,014 meters
We did not carry the audiophile grade audio equipment up here to prove that a hut can be luxurious (Revox Reel pared to Audio Solutions floor stenders compliment of Audoihall Tbilisi).
We carried it because thoughtfulness belongs in remote places too. Outside: mountains, weather and a great deal of sky. Inside - vacuum tubes, warming the soul with music while the room climate is already taken care of.
Then the music begins, and if you think the amplifier seems to have been designed by an alien who came to Earth to improve the bass response, we have no evidence to disprove it. Ask the Synthesis team how they manage such miracles.
Books, birds and “the postcards”
The library holds the Collins Bird Guide by Lars Svensson, Killian Mullarney and Dan Zetterström, and Nils van Duivendijk's two-volume ID Handbook of European Birds, with photographs by AGAMI Photo Agency. Birders can look for Altihut's Caucasus Big Five from the hut itself, while the birds have yet to adopt our booking system.
The PO Box lets visitors send a postcard (“the postcard”) anywhere in the world, and by doing it you are also feeding the strays. Our guestbook, handcrafted for us in Tbilisi by Manuskripti on Japanese paper, keeps each visitor's trace at 3,014 meters. A mountain hut can become part of someone's story long after the climb is over.
Summer 2026 in numbers
The Sumer season opened late, but interest did not wait. Between April and October, Altihut's story reached further than ever:
More than 104,000 interactions on our website
Nearly 100,000 active users from around the world
Up 42% of engaged visits vs 2025
26% of engaged visits came from Germany, Poland, the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland and US
More than double engaged visits from Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, y-o-y
65-71% of visits from five European markets
Georgia remains our home crowd and grew by more than a quarter and the United States stayed among our top markets worldwide.
What comes up, more goes down
Local farmers supply part of our food. Most of the rest comes from trusted suppliers in Tbilisi, including Silk Road Group's Unicorn team. Supplies travel to Stepantsminda, continue to Gergeti, then make the final climb with local horse handlers. Laundry travels down to a local provider and back up. Our coffee, roasted by Rain Coffee Roasters, makes its own journey from Batumi. Every load is local work and local income.
And the horses never come down empty. Between 2016 and 2025, Nisla and her companions carried more than five tons of waste off the mountain. Nisla's retired horseshoes now travel the world in a small box with our Eternity Card: a souvenir with an unusually useful past.
This season we also replaced our solar batteries for the third time, at our own cost, to keep the lights on and the antennas talking. When nobody else can do it, we must, and we do. The mountain keeps the final say and has no interest in our marketing plans.
At altitude, luxury is often measured by what arrives. We measure it by what leaves.
Winter is next, adventure ahead
Summer is over; winter is about to begin. For 2026/27, Altihut opens a limited, highly selective program for experienced ski-touring groups and mountaineers, a new format in Georgian adventure tourism: pre-booked stays in November and December, then the active ski-touring season from February 2027, with experienced guides. Next summer, the trail from Gergeti opens again for everyone ready to earn the view.
We could tell you more, but we would rather you came and checked for yourself. Hike up. Ask how the everything got here. Order a coffee at one of the highest restaurants in Europe. Send the postcard from 3,014 meters (by doing it, you also feeding the strays around Mountains). Leave your page in our guestbook for the next generation of explorers.
Carry something down with you, a horseshoe, a story, a little more attitude.
Every guest who comes with care becomes part of the change, proof that a mountain stay can be comfortable and responsible under the same roof.
Attitude, not Altitude. This is the way. The Altihut Way.
Plan your stay at altihut.ge and see you at 3,014, to infinity and beyond.
