Think Globally, Act Locally

October 2019

Unfortunately, the brutal reality of environmental pollution and the adverse impact of irresponsible, mass tourism are persistent consequences of modern human activity and the expansion of global tourism. These phenomena are fundamentally unacceptable to us.

This problem becomes particularly visible at high altitudes, where limited infrastructure and the absence of logistical support chains further exacerbate the environmental burden.

Altihut, located at an elevation of 3,014 meters above sea level, was established precisely in response to this challenge. Prior to the construction of the hut, the area was one of the main camping and resting spots on Mount Kazbeg, yet it had become infamous for its severe pollution and waste accumulation.

In response, the Altihut team took action. In the autumn of 2015, a footbridge was constructed over the Chkheri River to facilitate access, and in 2016, a large-scale cleanup initiative was launched. Over the course of these efforts, more than four tons of waste were collected and transported down from this altitude.

Our guiding principle has remained consistent throughout: “Think globally, act locally.”
